This architectural build situated on the upper slopes of Westmorland was designed by Keith Usher and engineered by Powell Fenwick. Winner of the Master Builders Regional Category Award and Masters Builders Gold Award 2023.
The brief for this residence was to create a single-level, family home that maximized the city and mountain views, while incorporating triple-car garaging—an uncommon feature for a steep site. The client requested minimal stairs for ease of family living and functionality, preferring to avoid a two-story design. To achieve this, a split-level approach was implemented between the garage and the entranceway, ensuring a smooth flow into the main living areas. A two-way mono-pitched roof was utilized to maintain compliance with the recession planes, ensuring the home’s profile remained unobtrusive.
The custom-designed triple-car garage features a dual-opening design, providing additional storage for a boat and trailer, a highly valued inclusion. Upon entering the home, a striking raked ceiling and expansive windows draw the eye toward the stunning city and mountain views, creating an immediate sense of openness. The raked ceiling enhances the light-filled atmosphere, opening up the kitchen, dining, office, and lounge areas, creating a seamless connection between spaces.
A large entertainers’ deck extends from the main living areas, providing shelter from the prevailing Christchurch easterly wind, while meticulously planned landscaping allows for a flat lawn and macrocarpa garden beds conveniently located near the kitchen. The home’s modern oak kitchen, complemented by a spacious butler's pantry and large skylights, adds to the sense of brightness and airiness throughout the interior.
The exterior of the home is clad in beautifully crafted Western Red Cedar in a light oak finish, paired with TARC snap-lock tray for contrast and low maintenance, ensuring both durability and aesthetic appeal.
